A Study of Spirituality in the Workplace "What do managers and executives believe and feel about workplace spirituality or
assessments of its purported benefits? In this article, the authors present the results of
a two-year empirical study based on face-to-face interviews and questionnaires. Participants differentiated strongly between religion and spirituality, viewing religion as
a highly inappropriate form of expression and spirituality as a highly appropriate
subject for the workplace. Most believed strongly that organizations must harness the
immense spiritual energy within each person in order to produce world-class products
and services." The Role of the Golden Rule "In their dealings with people, loyalty leaders tend to ignore modern management theory in favor of a code of behavior that is close to the Golden Rule. These companies demonstrate that loyalty to principles is a critical element of success even in today's super-competitive environment." "People have always been far more
motivated to devote energy to organizations with a service goal than to
organizations that exist exclusively to make a buck. This is obviously the
case, since in churches and civic organizations, most work for no other
reward. But there is no good reason to suppose we can't serve other people
in business as well, and there is every reason to do just that. Yet
corporate leaders lose sight of the fact. They can't understand why the
troops won't rally behind a mission statement that places maximization of
shareholder value as the highest corporate and ethical goal." Spiritual Renaissance in Business "This anthology effectively captures a
spiritual renaissance taking place in the business world today..." "Man is not just a biological and
psychological being but also a spiritual being." Spirituality vs. Religion "Spirituality serves as a context for the interconnectedness with those parts of ourselves that are not necessarily material or physical. It is formless. It contains no specific content or dogma. It allows for a direct relationship with the Divine through one's personal experience." "Religion is based on specific
concepts or form in which spirituality is viewed. It contains beliefs,
rules, structure and,
very often, tradition. It takes many forms, usually based upon the
teachings of an enlightened being such as a prophet or someone else who is seen
as having a very special relationship with the Divine." "Religion is something we can perhaps do
without. What we can't do without are those basic spiritual qualities such
as love and compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, a sense
of responsibility, a sense of harmony." Consciousness in Business "Humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs declares that self-actualization is a state sought by all human beings once we have satisfied the more basic needs of survival, gratification and belonging. It seems quite reasonable that as we humans
continue to evolve and become more conscious beings there will be a concurrent
need for our organizations to follow suite. As people continue on their
path of self-actualization, the enterprises, institutions and companies where
human beings come together to produce results will need to change dramatically
or die."
